……I listened silently, having made a conscious choice to open myself to her and become fully present. This type of discussion was not uncommon; caregivers are most often spouses or adult children with longstanding and challenging family dynamics intensifies by the stress of the situation. I knew that Anna needed non-judgment and a compassionate sounding board. My 4 AM nursing visit was not the time to begin to suggest alternate caregiving plans with Anna; that could be handled later if still necessary. I knew that my report to her primary team’s social worker and chaplain would bring their expertise and follow up visits. I could sense that Anna needed to vent to someone who would simply listen and help affirm all that she was doing for her husband…….
